Carroll: Put the brakes on the "crash tax"

Just weeks ago, Denver's unfortunate plan to impose accident-response fees on some non-resident motorists appeared unstoppable. So much for metro cooperation, it seemed. Once this "crash tax" was in place, suburban cities would be nuts not to retaliate and target outsiders with similar fees, too.

But the official complacency toward accident fees is eroding. An ordinance giving a green light to the fire department to proceed is not going to be fast-tracked to the full city council after all. It will first get a hearing in the safety committee. Read More
