Longmont City Council backs gun ban

Banning the open carrying of firearms in city-buildings won’t keep a maniac from going on a shooting spree, some City Council members argued.

But others argued that such a ban would keep city employees and customers from feeling intimidated or uncomfortable in public buildings — and it will give the city some muscle in asking people to not openly carry sidearms in city facilities.

The Longmont City Council voted 4-3 Tuesday night to give initial approval to ban on the open carrying of firearms in city-owned or city-operated buildings. Mayor Bryan Baum and council members Sarah Levison and Katie Witt voted against the ban. The ordinance is scheduled to come back to the council July 13 for a public hearing and final vote.
