DeGette to give "insider briefing" on BP’s Gusher in the Gulf

A leading government watchdog group has criticized Colorado Rep. Diana DeGette for holding a fundraising event for state Democrats billed as an "insider briefing" on the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Colorado Democratic Party circulated invitations to the July 12 fundraiser in Denver, promising a firsthand account of the situation in the Gulf from DeGette, a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee who recently returned from a trip to Gulf areas affected by the Deepwater Horizon leak.

Craig Holman of the good-government group Public Citizen called the fundraiser a "condemnation of our system of campaign financing."

"DeGette is using her leadership position on the Energy Committee to pull in special interest money, mostly from those businesses and lobbyists who will be affected by the pending energy legislation that will come out of the committee," he charged. "This particular fundraiser, however, is unusually tactless, given the gravity and public anger over the oil spill disaster."

Despite the fundraiser's billing, DeGette campaign spokeswoman Lisa Cohen said the congresswoman will be sharing "absolutely no inside information" with attendees. Read More -
