GOP questions motive to replace Tapia

Democratic nominee Angela Giron is poised to step into state Sen. Abel Tapia's seat for the remainder of his term. The leader of the local Republican Party thinks it's an unnecessary step aimed at bolstering Giron's chances of winning the seat for a full term in November.

"I believe that the only reason (Democrats) are doing that is to give (Giron) a little more credibility, when she has no experience holding office," said Dave Dill, chairman of the Pueblo County Republican Party. "They're trying to position her as an incumbent instead of a newcomer."

Tapia, D-Pueblo, is term-limited. On Friday he was named director of the Colorado Lottery, effective Aug. 1. Tapia has said he will submit his resignation from the Senate around that time, allowing Democratic precinct chairs from Senate District 3 to choose his replacement through the year's end.    More -
