Boulder City Councilman Cowles gets half off his property taxes

Some Boulder residents are calling for City Councilman Macon Cowles to pay thousands of dollars in back property taxes after it was discovered that his home has been significantly undervalued by the Boulder County Assessor's Office -- possibly for more than a decade.

Cowles' house -- a 4,831-square-foot, five-bedroom residence at 1680 Wilson Court -- was recently put on the market with an asking price of $2.1 million.

The price immediately caught the attention of some residents and county officials because the assessor lists the estimated value of the home at only $835,000.

County officials found that the estimated value of Cowles' home during the last mass appraisal in 2009 was based on the last known description of the fit and finish of the home -- conducted in 1995.   More -
