With conservatives of all stripes calling on Dan Maes to exit the governor's race, the only responsible move for the disgraced candidate is to step down.
Republican Party leaders, such as former U.S. Sen. Hank Brown, as well as Tea Party activists, now insist he's no longer good for their cause.
We've questioned Maes' credibility for two months and said he wasn't fit to serve as governor. The issues facing Colorado are important, and voters deserve a legitimate gubernatorial race and debate between credible candidates — not a sideshow.
Logistically, Maes needs to drop out now. The deadline for certifying ballots at the Secretary of State's office is Friday afternoon. The office says there is a only a short time left after that deadline passes to change the names of major party candidates before ballots are printed.
State election law mandates that a party must convene its replacement committee five days after a nominee drops out, but that could be done and a new pick made if Maes exits by the weekend.
While we've repeatedly questioned Maes' credibility, please let us acknowledge his unique accomplishment. A complete outsider, Maes worked the campaign trail and appealed to Tea Party and 9.12 Project members, enough of whom supported him over the favored former Congressman Scott McInnis. – More -
Maes really should quit. It's only going to get worse as the election nears.
