‘Maes Meltdown’ – Friday morning update

Today is deadline day. Colorado's secretary of state must certify the Nov. 2 ballot today to begin printing arrangements next week.

Colorado GOP Chairman Dick Wadhams says that if Maes withdraws by the end of today, the party can give the vacancy committee the required five-day notice and meet next Tuesday. The state Republican Central Committee could then appoint a new nominee and still get their name on the November ballot. After today it would be too late.

Dan Maes continued to hemorrhage support from both big name politicos as well as the grass root groups that got him the nomination in the first place.

Northern Colorado Tea Party leader Lesley Hollywood, wrote on her Facebook page Thursday: “Alright Dan Maes - it's time for you to go. Get out now, while the gettin' is still good.”

Tea Party organizer and Mesa County Commissioner Janet Rowland, a former candidate for lieutenant governor in 2006, repudiated Maes, calling him a fraud. Rowland said the “character issues” that have arisen around Maes show he is “utterly unprepared to be our next governor." Rowland added, "Dan is an accidental nominee, and he is a fraud. I realize those are harsh words, but in this case the truth is harsh.”

State Sen. Greg Brophy of Wray said of Maes, "He's lost the confidence of almost everybody, even the grassroots support he used to have. It's pretty obvious to everyone he should step aside,"

Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck issued a statement Thursday evening saying:
"I am deeply concerned about the recent events that have come to light and I want to give Dan the chance to do the right thing, I haven't been able to reach him today to express my concerns. I will have a full announcement tomorrow, after I speak with him."

Former Colorado State Treasurer candidate, Muhammad Ali Hasan, was one of the few to expressed their support for Maes on Thursday. Hasan wrote on his Facebook page: “Dude, you won the primary- tell the GOP KingMakers to step off- this is democracy, not Communist Russia.”
