The Denver Post reported Sunday that the Adams County assessor reduced the taxable value of property owned by some of his campaign donors by millions of dollars, which led to dramatic tax savings for the contributors.
Assessor Gil Reyes cut $23 million from the taxable value of 11 buildings owned by Majestic Realty Co whose officers and related companies donated a total of $14,000 to his previous campaigns, the newspaper said.
The action saved Majestic Realty $800,000 in taxes this year alone, The Post reported.
Reyes, who is a Democrat, said the reductions had nothing to do with campaign donations or party affiliation and that he wasn’t aware that Majestic Realty was linked to any of his contributors.
"My treasurer, who's my girlfriend, does this," he said.
