Colorado Springs artist picked to paint Obama portrait for State Capitol

Colorado Springs artist Sarah A. Boardman has been chosen to paint the portrait of President Barack Obama for the State Capitol.

The portrait will join the other 43 presidential portraits in the Gallery of the Presidents located on the third floor of the State Capitol rotunda.

The other portraits were painted by nationally recognized portrait artist Lawrence Williams who died in 2003. The committee wanted to commission an artist who could paint in a similar style, color range and background as Williams work.

Representative Paul Weissmann took the lead on adding President Obama to the Gallery of the Presidents.

The portrait, which will cost $10,000, is being paid for by private funds and the lead gift was given by former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb and his wife Wilma.

The portrait is estimated to be finished by late April and the dedication should occur before the 2011 State Legislative session ends in May.
