Senate passed two bills to protect taxpayers and consumers in Colorado.

Monday the Senate passed two bills to protect taxpayers and consumers in Colorado. Both bills are sponsored by Senator Morgan Carroll (D-Aurora).

The Taxpayer Empowerment Act (Senate Bill 25) will help ensure transparency and accountability in government contracts with private vendors and ensure taxpayer funds are used responsibly. Senator Carroll’s bill to increase consumer protections, Senate Bill 68, is an update to the Colorado Consumer Protection Act. The bill will protect consumers from unfair and deceptive trade practices by restoring rights that were taken away by an activist court decision.

In 1998, the Colorado Supreme Court created a new requirement that consumers prove a significant impact on the public. SB 68 restores consumers’ rights by returning to them the protections of the Colorado Consumer Protection Act.

Senator Carroll offered the following comment on the passage of the bill today:

“For far too long, Coloradans have been burdened by extra steps and processes that discourage them from exercising their rights. Consumers who become victims of unfair and deceptive trade practices should be empowered to seek remedy.”

Both bills passed on second reading and now await final approval by the Senate before moving to the House of Representatives for consideration. The Taxpayer Empowerment Act is sponsored in the House by Representative Mark Ferrandino (D-Denver). Senate Bill 68 is sponsored in the House by Representative Judy Solano (D-Brighton).
