Denver’s Director of Elections announces his departure

Denver’s Clerk and Recorder, Stephanie Y. O’Malley, announced Monday that the Director of Elections, Michael Scarpello, has accepted a new position as Registrar of Voters for San Bernardino County, California.

Scarpello was hired as Denver’s director of elections in August 2007 after a national search.

During his time at the Denver Elections Division, Scarpello helped to create the Ballot TRACE program, which allows voters to track their ballots through the mail.

A transition period will take place in order for Scarpello to continue to oversee the May 3rd Municipal General Election. During this transition, a team consisting of Deputy Director of Elections Amber McReynolds, Operations Manager Paul Casper, and former Larimer County Chief Deputy Clerk and Recorder and Director of Elections Jan Kuhnen will assist Scarpello during the final preparations for the May 3 Municipal General Elections. These three managers represent a total of 34 years of elections experience between them. McReynolds will take over as Interim Director of Elections in early May upon her return from maternity leave. Kuhnen has joined the team on a temporary basis to assist during McReynolds’ leave.
