House Bill 1273, sponsored by Republican Reps. B.J. Nikkel of Loveland, House Majority Leader Amy Stephens of Monument, and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp of Littleton passed out of the House Health and Environment Committee today on a party line vote. The measure would authorize the state of Colorado to collaborate with other states to create an interstate compact opting out of federal laws regulating health care.
Stephens, stating her reasons for sponsoring the bill, said it’s about self determination for states.
“The idea of a compact is not to be liable to federal law but to be able for the state to decide for itself–and I am for state rights,” said Stephens.
Critics of the measure pointed to the defeat of a similar concept by voters in November stating that fifty-three percent of the Colorado population does not want to be exempt from the federal health care reform.
