Sen. King’s School Safety Measure Passes

One of State Senator Steve King’s primary legislative initiatives, the School Safety Bill, passed the Senate today on second reading.

SB11-173, of which Sen. King is the primary sponsor, calls for state-wide communications interoperability that includes all schools. The bill, which has no costs attached to it, incorporates existing technology to improve communication between schools and emergency responders. It is the first such measure in the nation, and received broad bi-partisan support.

“This bill allows school personnel, who are usually the first on the scene of any school-related emergency and thus have the most important, timely, and accurate information, to communicate that information directly to law enforcement, medical, fire, or other emergency personnel directly. It will save time and, quite possibly, lives.” said Sen. King. “I am proud, as a Coloradan and a parent, that this legislation received so much support from both sides of the aisle.”
