Durango to put school tax increase on ballot

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education agreed unanimously Tuesday to begin preparing a ballot measure that would raise property taxes.

The concept of a mill-levy override and how it might be used were rated in a survey of about 400 resident within the school district's boundaries in late May and early June. The survey showed 62 percent of those questioned would vote yes to increase taxes.

"As much as I hate to say it, I think we're going to have to go ahead with the mill levy," board member Wendy Rice said. "When we first talked, I wasn't in favor of it. I wanted to be sure we dusted all our cupboards first. We've done that, and we need it to proceed forward." - Read More -
