Gessler, a Denver election-law lawyer, is running for secretary of state in the November election against appointed Secretary of State Bernie Buescher.
Gessler said Wednesday during a trip to Pueblo that his experience as a litigant in many election cases gives him an advantage in the job over Buescher.
Gessler cites his legal work as experience for the secretary job, of which elections is the most important duty. He represented former Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez in a ballot fight in 2006. In 2004, he fought to keep independent Ralph Nader on the state presidential ballot and fought Common Cause in a voter identification case.
"What I bring is a can-do spirit to the job," said Gessler. "For instance, federal legislation was passed last year that said states had to get soldiers serving overseas their ballots within 45 days of a general election.
"Instead of getting to the (state) Legislature in January to accomplish that, Buescher said it would force a change in the primary date (Aug. 10). He said he'd seek a waiver right away. I would have taken care of the problem as soon as possible." - More -
