Colorado Capitol aide, Mickie Clayton, dies at 87

Mickie Clayton, a long-time aide at the state Capitol who was known for her annual homemade Italian lunches, passed away last week.

Clayton, 87, had just worked her final session at the Capitol in May after 18 years in the building. Over that time, Mickie, a small woman with a huge personality, had become more of a fixture under the dome than most of the lawmakers themselves.

Most recently, Clayton served as an aide to state Sen. Paula Sandoval, who was in her final year in the legislature. Prior to that, she was an aide to state Sen. Rob Hernandez. And, for 40 years, she's been a fixture in her north Denver neighborhood where she belonged to several Italian clubs and often attended Democratic events.

She passed away on Saturday morning at the Hospice of St. John in Lakewood.

Her visitation is set for this Thursday at 5 p.m., followed by the Rosary at 7 p.m., both at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 3020 Federal Blvd. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday, 12:30PM, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 3549 Navajo Street.  More -
