How will Pueblo fare with Sen. Tapia off the JBC?

Gone from the committee that holds the state’s purse strings, is longtime Sen. Abel Tapia, and he took Pueblo’s voice with him.

Tapia was term-limited from office and now serves as director of the Colorado Lottery.

He was the latest in a string of lawmakers from south of Colorado Springs to serve on the JBC. The tradition, except for a few brief interruptions, dates back to the 1950s and is largely responsible for Pueblo being second only to Denver in the number of state employees and facilities.

Tapia said he’s worried about the impact of his void and the state’s budget crisis on the Colorado State Fair, the Colorado Lottery, the Colorado Mental Health Institute, the Pueblo document center, colleges in Southern Colorado and the prison system that drives much of the economy in and around Pueblo.      - More -
