Nicholson declares victory in Colorado’s Senate District 16 race

Democrat Jeanne Nicholson is claiming the win in a particularly tight race for Senate District 16 against Republican Tim Leonard. Nicholson's campaign treasurer Don Parsons e-mailed Wednesday evening to say that Nicholson is over 700 votes in the lead. There are still nearly 600 provisional ballots in Jefferson and Summit County to be counted, but after weeks of watching a race that had a margin of only about 500 votes, Nicholson said Leonard called her Wednesday to concede the race.

Senate District 16 includes all of Summit, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties and parts of Jefferson and Boulder counties.

Nicholson, a Gilpin County Commissioner and public health nurse, will take over the seat held by Summit County's Dan Gibbs, who vacated it to run unopposed for Summit County Commissioner.     More -
