“Stay out of our way,” a local dairyman recommended to Governor Hickenlooper’s transition team in Greeley this week, “With less regulation we can prosper, then you’ll have more state revenue.”
From the audience of about 60 people, the team heard numerous ideas about how to run Colorado’s government when Hickenlooper takes office in January.
Robbyn Wood, a small-business consultant from Fort Collins, told the group that small businesses and entrepreneurs create most new jobs – not government. In fact, about 70% of new jobs in America are created by small businesses. “Colorado has well-educated people with good work skills. The answer for them is innovation. We need funding for small business innovators and entrepreneurs,” she said.
Wood suggested that loans and incentives be made available to small businesses by using state funds with surpluses and special bonds. Wood argued that money in large state funds could be used to finance economic development through loans and grants to small business. She also said that industrial bonds might be used for small business development. – More -
