Tax-slashing measures destroyed at polls

Colorado voters killed a series of controversial tax-cutting initiatives at the Colorado polls yesterday by a significant margin.

Proposition 101, Amendment 60 and Amendment 61 would have lowered taxes by limiting government from spending and taxing, especially in the areas of vehicles, telecommunication, income, property and government borrowing. The opposition to the so-called “ugly 3” heavily outspent supporters of the measures and claimed the ballot items would have triggered a voter-approved recession.

Dan Hopkins, who helped lead the fight against the measures, said he was happy that voters from all backgrounds and political affiliations rejected the initiatives.

“I think we protected Colorado’s future,” he said. “These would have devastated our economy, killed jobs and ruined our schools.”

But Natalie Menten, campaign coordinator for the measures, said Coloradans missed out at a chance for moderate tax relief.

“We tried to bring moderate tax relief to citizens and protect our children from excessive government debt, but when facing over $7 million from special interest opposition groups using scare tactics compared to our low-budget campaign, which spread the truth but didn’t have funds for commercials É we did the best we could,” she said.    More -
