Sen. Udall Supports Interior Announcement on Oil Shale Regulations

Today, Mark Udall responded to the Interior Department's proposal to re-open the planning and rulemaking process related to oil shale:

"Secretary Salazar's plan to re-start the public rulemaking process regarding oil shale development is the right step to take. We need an all-of-the-above strategy to end our dependence on foreign oil, create jobs and confront global warming. Oil shale presents some fascinating possibilities as we work toward that goal, but there's no need to rush - oil shale isn't commercially feasible yet. We need to move carefully to make sure we can produce oil from shale safely and responsibly, without depleting our limited water and power supplies or creating a destructive boom-bust cycle in Colorado communities.

"Re-opening the rulemaking will move the decision-making process along, while allowing the BLM to take a fresh, comprehensive look at the potential costs of oil shale production. And it will give Coloradans a chance to make their voices heard about how oil shale development will affect their communities."
