State Rep. Kathleen Curry and the House District 61 race

The challenge of the task ahead certainly doesn't escape State Rep. Kathleen Curry, who brought her historic bid for re-election as an independent write-in candidate to the Glenwood Chamber Issues & Answers Night this week.

Seated beside the two party candidates in the race — Democrat Roger Wilson of Glenwood Springs and Republican Luke Korkowski of Crested Butte — the three-term legislator and Gunnison rancher showed the polished knowledge of the issues and internal workings of state government typical of any incumbent.

Still, Curry, who switched her political affiliation from Democrat to independent last December, is diligent about taking the time to explain herself and her decision, not to mention how those voters who support her need to go about casting their votes.

“There wasn't any watershed issue, I just had a difference of opinion with the Democratic leadership in the House, especially on fiscal matters,” Curry, whose District 61 covers all or parts of five Colorado counties, including eastern Garfield and Pitkin counties, said during her opening comments at the Sept. 7 candidates' forum.    More -
