It’s a write-in election for Denver's City Council 8 seat

The Denver Office of the Clerk and Recorder has announced the procedure for filling the City Council District 8 vacancy which was brought about by the passing of Councilwoman Carla Madison on Tuesday.

The ballots for the May 3, 2011 Municipal General Election have already been printed, so Councilwoman Madison’s name will appear on them. Do to the fact that no other candidates filed to run for the District 8 seat, the Councilwoman’s name will also be the only one on the ballot.

The ballots will be sent out to voters on April 14th.

Denver election statutes state that any votes cast for a candidate who dies after ballots are printed and before the election takes place will not be counted, which now makes the District 8 Council race a write-in election.

Anyone who wishes to run as a write-in candidate must file a notarized Affidavit of Intent with the Denver Elections Division in order for their votes to be counted. The deadline to file an Affidavit of Intent is 6 p.m., Monday, April 18.

The winner of the write-in campaign for City Council District 8 will serve the full 4-year term beginning on July 18, 2011.

If no write-in candidates emerge for the District 8 Council seat, a special election will be conducted at a future date set by City Council resolution.
